Display Relevant Adsense Ads Using Section Targeting

Posted in Adsense, Google, Tips and Tricks by Paul Jacob on November 10th, 2006

Adsense reportAdsense has become the main source for revenue among many bloggers. However,making money using adsense is not as easy as many believe it to be.

Many components have to be combined skillfully to even hope for a considerable amount of profit. One of the most important aspects of making money with adsense is your ability to serve your audience with the most relevant advertisements.

Google has added several features to their adsense program to enable publishers to better target ads. Section targeting is the latest and most effective addition to adsense.

Blogs usually contain many features that often confuse the adsense bot and result in serving irrelevant advertisements. Some of these features include Catagories,User Comments,Your Web Profiles,and even RSS Web Feeds.

For instance if you were to write a post on the Lastest Cellphones but spam produced by user comments might contain links to Mesothelioma sites. This alone could confuse the adsense bot to produce ad’s that are completely irrelevant to your post topic.

A post usually only takes up 50 percent of the total blog,while the rest of your space is filled with comments, links, catagories, Flickr images and such forth. Google has infact developed section targeting to deal with these exact situations. Section targeting uses certain html tweaks to force the google adsense bot to focus on specific content.

Some things to note before implementing Google Section Targeting:

1. Don’t cheat Google by targetting wrong content (doing so might result in Google banning).
2.Try including user comments in the Tags, but do remove them if you find that it is worthless.
3. If you do not see results quickly, give it few days for the adsense bot to crawl your blog.
4. If your Google earnings drop for the first few days, experiment for some time.
5. Always include the Title of post within the tags.

This is how it’s done. Just open your HTML page in your prefered editor such as notepad and place your cursor to the beginning of your article and insert the following line:
note:If you are using wordpress or any other blog publishing software that contains a built in editor, you can place the following lines without any external software such as notepad.

<!- -google_ad_section_start- ->

Then point your cursor where yourpost ends and insert the following HTML line

<!- -google_ad_section_end- ->

By adding the above code to your template you are basically suggesting to the google bot which content you want included.

    You need the 2 -’s at the start and end of each tag.

    Good Tip though

    Adwords can be usefull but most of the time getting a random site to advertise on you instead is worth more.

    Couldn’t you just add some dynamic php code inbetwee that would randomally shuffle out various lines of text, so if you knew a high paying keyword was “monkey paw”, you could have a php script randomally cycle through various sentences about ‘monkey paw’. The sentences could make sense, and google would never be able to detect this type of fraud become its not static content and its always changing, and technically this is legitimate but in some ways its gaming the system.

    Jason,

    I dont believe in trying to play google,as I am sure google is smart enough to figure it out sooner or later.My best advice to anyone trying to profit from their blog using adsense is to follow all of the google rules.

    Though Adsense targeting may sound essential for display relevant ads, but it does filter away some of other potential advertisements. Whether should there be profit or not, I’ll guess I will let Adsense do the talking.

    Optimiser vos annonces AdSense avec le ciblage par section (section targeting)…

    Il est assez simple d’afficher des publicités AdSense sur son blog : une inscription, une petite configuration des annonces à afficher, un copier-coller du code javascript généré, et hop, votre blog est maintenant paré à générer des millions …

    @Paul
    I am personally using the method mentioned above and would guarentee the results are positive. Ads are much more targeted meaning a lot more relative which in turn increases the click through rate.

    Hey all,

    Have been researching adsense for a while now, and just recently started making some decent cash flow by using some advertising methods. Problem is, when i’m only netting 10%/day because Google is displaying ads which are completely irrelevant and i’m getting a 3% CTR, well, it pisses me off.

    I can open the same EXACT index.html file from my computer, and get COMPLETELY relevant ads, but if I open that exact same file by searching through Google, and clicking on the site, every single ad on the page is COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT.

    It doesnt make ANY sense, and Iv’e searched and searched for anything i’ve done wrong within my page structure and can’t find anything. Iv’e even used the same exact template (minus the content / article etc.) from other sites, which are working great and have no problem, and still. This one site seems to suffer with irrelevant ads.

    I read somewhere that it could be the advertisers running out of funds due to too many “webmaster / ad-displayers” but why would there be ads about something COMPLETELY not even in the same ballpark? And why when I run that same exact html file from my desktop, do I get all relevant ads???

    I’m obviously confused and irritated, but would give much thanks to anyone that would be able to provide info on this “situation”.

    PS- Before anyone asks me, my keyword density is more than sufficient, I have also implemented the AdSense “section targeting” although only a day or two ago, so hopefully it shows some results.

    I also have used some of the “ad filters”, although I try not to use too many, as these are all time blocks from the sites you set up, and I don’t know how many, or what sites I will have in the future, and possibly forget what “competitive ad filters” I may have set in the past.

    Once again, any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
